Bipolar Bear iPhone App | Shameful!

Blog Post by: Angry Mr. Anderson

Title: Bipolar Bear (iPhone App ) Cost: $0.99 Category: Entertainment Developer: Katalyst Corp

You can shake babies and have your iPhone app pulled, but exploitation of mentally ill people via an iPhone app is perfectly acceptable. This apps functionality is a manic teddy bear and a depressed teddy bear that spout off sayings depending on the aforementioned mood.

It’s apparent the developers at Katalyst Corp apparently bypassed any feelings in their dark souls, in a greedy attempt to make money on the backs of people who suffer from Bipolar Disorder. Maybe this app is enough to cause someone to end their life, I guess that would cause a stir. Wonder if Katalyst Corp put a disclaimer in their app saying “we are not responsible for driving people to their death.” Instead, they put verbiage into the description stating their app actually helps “experts develop tools” to help this disorder. Rubbish! This app gets 0 out of 5 CrazyMikes Head’s for being mercenary . CM

***Disclosure***The developer, public relations company, producer, etc may have provided a “promo code” (paid voucher) for review of this iPhone application. http://www.crazymikesapps.com

    Hi Mike,

Needless to say, we're very disappointed in your review of the Bipolar Bear application for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. If you'd visit our website, mybpbear.com, you'd see the list of charities we support, and the reasons behind the creation of the app. Everyone involved, including myself, has personal experience with bipolar disorder and we all understand how devastating bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses can be. That's one of the reasons the co-creators developed the app-to raise funds for bipolar disorder research and services. However, they've chosen to use humor to both raise awareness of bipolar disorder, and raise funds at the same time. You can disagree with the strategy if you like, but it's not accurate to say that the creators of Bipolar Bear don't care about people with mental illness. That's simply not true. We all care deeply. But each of us also believe that laughter can be healthy and healing. (Which is why we don't have an issue with your nickname “Crazy Mike.” We get that you're not making fun of people with mental illness. It's just a name.)

Thanks for the chance to respond.

The name “CrazyMike” is not attacking Bipolar disorder, just a nickname my nieces game me, but they call me Crazy Uncle Mike. Funny, I know a lot of people that have suffered from this disease and never saw Bipolar disorder as something to laugh at. My personal experience with Bipolar disorder was with a sibling and never consider this disease to be funny and I am a sarcastic guy. Some things are apparent and the attempt to make money off of a disease in your case seems to be obvious. Thanks for the comment. CM
